The biggest news over the last 24 hours included progress on the vaccine front. The company Moderna is collaborating with Dr. Fauci’s agency in the development of a vaccine. The first human trials proved effective. Even though this was a positive development, celebrations need to be measured. The testing included a total of 8 people. The idea that a virus will be available by the end of the summer is still unrealistic.
Ecuador believes they are past the peak of the outbreak, but the nation has not recovered from the darkest days of the pandemic. Authorities say many of the dead are still unidentified. In Guayaquil, which saw the worst of the pandemic outbreak in Ecuador, the city regularly saw an average of 45 deaths per day. During the peak of the outbreak, that number jumped to 600 death daily.
China told the World Health Organization, they supported an international review of its response to the coronavirus outbreak led by the WHO, and after the emergency ends.
India extended its national lockdown to the end of May but also allowed local, and state leaders more say and control on the reopening process.
Qatar’s government-mandated a tracking app that all residents must download and utilize as part of the country’s efforts to monitor the spread of the virus. New cases surged in the Persian Gulf region over the last few days. Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates each imposed further restrictions within their borders.
Iran was the original epicenter of the coronavirus spread in the Middle East. Last month the country lifted restrictions against the advice of health experts. This week Iran is back among the nations reporting more than 1,000 newly confirmed cases in the last 24 hours every day.
Chile is another nation within this hot zone club of more than 1,000 newly confirmed cases per day. Regardless of the continued threat of the virus, protesters in Chile and tired of the government’s lockdown and clashing with police.
