- Global confirmed coronavirus cases – 5,934,376
- Global coronavirus deaths – 362,713
The virus is spreading faster. There were more than 700,000 newly confirmed infections in the last week. Last week the world crossed the 5 million infection mark. Today we will pass 6 million infections. On May 20, we updated that we had our first day with more than 100,000 new cases in a day. That occurred again four more times since then. There are multiple reasons why the numbers are rising so much faster now. Critics argue the numbers are growing only because there is more testing completed. That is correct. But the greater fact is that the virus is spreading. More testing has little meaning if test results are not accepted as an accurate measurement for the spread of the virus.
Latin America is taking the greatest brunt of the spread of the virus. This week the World Health Organization said the Americas are the new epicenter of the virus. Peru, Chile, and Mexico each recorded more than 10,000 new cases in the last week. Brazil was nearing half a million cases with almost 25,000 cases yesterday.
A surge of new cases in South Korea led to 250 schools reclosed, and 117 more schools postponed their reopening.
Strange History in the US
The brutal death of George Floyd by a police officer is a strange new ingredient to these historic times we are living in for the US. In Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota, as massive protests roll across the city, experts warn the mass gatherings are likely spreading the virus for a new surge there. Protestors torched the police station a Minneapolis last night. The governor declared a state of emergency in the Twin Cities, but expect more protests, violent and peaceful, over the weekend here.
In Louisville, Kentucky, a separate protest resulted in seven people shot last night. The demonstrators gathered to protest the killing of Breonna Taylor; a black woman shot when police entered her home in March.
