Global Pandemic – September 4, 2020, Daily Update

Thailand has identified its first new coronavirus case in more than 100 days. New Zealand recorded its first coronavirus death since May.

France reported 7,000 new cases on Thursday.

India’s new case count on Thursday once again reached above 80,000 in a single day.

Brazil surpassed 4 million confirmed cases.

US Pandemic – September 4, 2020, Daily Update

The US had five straight weeks of decreasing new cases, but that streak came to an end this week. Recent hospitalizations and deaths by the virus in the US continued to decline.

Pandemic Vaccine Efforts

AstraZeneca, one of the leaders in the US effort to secure a coronavirus vaccine, announced they need 30,000 volunteers for Phase III of testing. The Pentagon has selected five testing locations for the new potential vaccine.

The World Health Organization (WHO) said the public should not expect a coronavirus vaccine until at least mid-2021.

Portland

In Portland, law enforcement officials shot and killed a man they sought to arrest for the killing of a right-wing protester in August. The 48-year-old Michael Forest Reinohel was identified as an Antifa supporter. He produced a gun when police attempted to arrest him, and he was shot dead on the scene.

US Protests

A new report from the American Conflict Location and Event Data Project has tracked the 2020 protests that spread across the country. According to the report, 93% of these protests remained nonviolent. The report warned, “violent political polarization” could spill over into the November elections.

Ethiopia

Since June, at least 500 Christians in Ethiopia have been killed in door to door attacks. The suspected killers are among an ethnic Muslim group within the country.

Japan

Japan is bracing for another major typhoon, which should hit its shores over the weekend.
