Human Rights Watch released an interesting piece today called 1971 All Over Again. It is comparing the current events with the Rohingya in Myanmar with what took place in 1971. This triggered two thoughts I wanted to ship out to the End of History audience.
If you are looking for a good book for the upcoming fall months I recommend The Blood Telegram by Gary J. Bass. This book details the genocide that took shape in 1971 as Bangladesh fought to free itself from Pakistan and India for its own independence. Interestingly I made reference to this war in a recent podcast episode on AQ Khan.
If you want to skip the book and get right to the story of 1971 then check out this podcast episode I did in 2014. The Blood Telegram book was a key source used in developing that episode.
There is a lot of back story to what is unfolding in Southeast Asia right now. It is complex but wise observers of the world would do well to keep informed as this all takes shape.
