- Global coronavirus deaths – 347,192
Two significant coronavirus events occurred in the US over the weekend. The country approached 100,000 official confirmed deaths by the virus. The US will pass that number in the next few hours. That number is nearly three times more than the nation with the second-highest death count by the virus (UK).
In the face of that news, social distancing seemed to disappear across the country. Americans could not resist the beach on Memorial Day Weekend, and from Daytona Beach to New Jersey to lake resorts in Missouri, they turned out by the tens of thousands. Photos from around the country showed swimming pools, bars, and other public areas filled wall to wall with people celebrating the three-day weekend.
Virginia’s governor, Ralph Northam, showed up at the beach without a mask this weekend. Northam has repeatedly urged residents to wear a mask and even suggested a mandatory order may be in place within his state in the next week.
After tweeting that state governors need to reopen churches at the end of last week, this weekend, President Trump said schools need to open ASAP.
New studies suggest the coronavirus is now moving through rural America. Experts are concerned that weaker healthcare systems and older population will be devastated in these communities with the spread of the virus.
The Michigan Department of correction announced they tested all inmates within their 29 prisons for the coronavirus. The total number of inmates tested was 38,130. So far, 3,263 tests have proven positive (9%). Currently, 16,500 tests remain pending.

Brazil continues to surge in new cases. The country now holds the second-highest confirmed case in the world at more than 360,000. President Trump banned travel from Brazil to the US.
The pandemic’s effects subsided in Spain, a former hot spot for the virus. Protests erupted in several Spanish cities over the weekend from Madrid to Seville, Barcelona, and Valencia. Citizens were calling for the resignation of the government after the devastating impact of the coronavirus in Spain. Spain has over 280,000 confirmed cases and nearly 30,000 deaths.
In South Africa, 22,000 cases were reported so far. A third of those were in the last week. South Africa’s President warned the country on Sunday that it will get worse. Even with that warning, restrictions in the country began to be lifted.
