In the 18th and 19th centuries the shape of European society and culture began to significantly transform. This change was partially the result of the industrial revolution and the Europe’s movement from an agrarian society to an industrial and urban society. It was also partially the result of the political fallout of the French Revolution. Both of these events contributed to rising frustration among Europeans and also the rise of secret societies, from the Illuminati (yes they were a real organization) to more sinister and effective organizations.

The rise of secret societies is a key part of the history of terrorism. From the Illuminati to 9/11 conspiracy theories, secret societies and the paranoia they inspire are key pieces to the history of terrorism. In this episode we look at the state of Europe after the French Revolution, the rise of Secret Societies, both their myth and their realities.
